Now is the time....Core aerate your lawn!

Updated: Sep 4, 2020

It's that time of year again! The cooler temps of the Fall season will be moving in quickly bringing us the beautiful vibrant colors of Autumn. This time of year is a great time to maintain the vibrant green color of your lawn.

Over this summer you may have noticed that your lawn has taken some abuse while spending much more time outdoors, such as soil compaction and thatch build-up. These are naturally occurring problems but can be resolved by performing core aeration and over seeding your lawn.

Soil compaction occurs when soil particles are pressed together, reducing pore space between them. Heavily compacted soils contain few large pores and have a reduced rate of both water infiltration and drainage from the compacted layer. Excessive soil compaction impedes root growth and therefore limits the amount of soil explored by roots. This, in turn, can decrease the lawn's ability to take up nutrients and water.

Thatch build-up can result in some serious problems. Thick thatch layers can cause extensive root damage. Because thatch heats up and dries out quickly, the roots risk becoming too dry. Wet thatch holds too much water during rainy periods, resulting in root rot. Another concern of thatch build-up is that it could potentially harbor large populations of disease-causing organisms and insects. Applications of fertilizers & pesticides can bind to the thatch, reducing their effectiveness and preventing their movement into the soil.
